Symptoms and causes

What goes wrong with old consoles and handhelds

Screen dark, faded or with lines

On the Game Boy whole lines are often missing from the picture because the connection to the screen has come loose. On the DS and 3DS the ribbon cable in the hinge can break.

We check the connection, cable and screen and replace whatever is faulty.

Progress is not saved

Many Game Boy cartridges, such as the Pokémon editions, keep the save with a coin cell inside the cartridge. When it is flat the save is lost, and swapping it also wipes the save.

We replace the battery and then check that saving works.

Will not start or blinks

An NES that blinks instead of starting usually has dirty or worn contacts in the cartridge slot. An N64 shows no picture without a Jumper Pak or Expansion Pak in the slot on top.

Cleaned contacts are often enough, otherwise we replace the connector.

No sound or hissing

On the Game Boy the speaker, its contacts or the volume wheel are often to blame.

We clean or replace the parts.

Corroded battery compartment

Leaked batteries leave corrosion on the contacts until the device will not start at all.

We remove it and replace the contacts if needed.

Wii, GameCube and Wii U

Drives that no longer read discs and ports with no contact are the typical cases here.

We check the laser, mechanism and ports.

Three steps

How the repair works

  1. Enquire

You pick your device above and describe what no longer works. With our reply you send it in by post or drop it off in Holziken by appointment.

  2. Diagnosis and fixed price

We tell you what is faulty, whether spare parts exist and what the repair costs.

  3. Repair and return

After your OK we repair it, test it with a game and send the device back to you.

Honest maths

When the repair is not worth it

For some old devices there are no spare parts left, or the repair costs more than the device is worth. Then we tell you, and if you like we make you an offer, because we buy faulty retro consoles too.

Common questions

Why does my Game Boy game no longer save?

Many cartridges keep the save with a coin cell. When it goes flat after many years the save is lost, and swapping it wipes the save. With a new battery the game saves again.

Is there a warranty on the repair?

Yes. The repair we carried out and the parts we fitted come with a 12 month warranty from the day the device is returned. New damage from drops or liquid and work by third parties are excluded. The details are on our warranty page.

Do you also repair the Nintendo 3DS and DS?

Yes. Nintendo itself no longer repairs devices of the 3DS family. With us you get a free diagnosis and a fixed amount for the repair.

My N64 shows no picture, what can I check?

Check whether a Jumper Pak or an Expansion Pak is in the slot on top. Without one of the two the N64 does not start up to a picture. If it is in and the screen stays black, we look at the console.

Is it worth repairing an old console?

Often yes, because these devices are no longer made new and many faults, such as contacts or batteries, can be fixed with a few parts. We tell you what it costs before the repair.

Do you also repair the Wii, Wii U and GameCube?

Yes, with the same free diagnosis. For drives it depends on whether spare parts are still available.
